How Can I Become Fluent in Spanish?

Over my 14 years of being a private Spanish tutor in Phoenix, I have gotten hundreds of emails from students requesting information about my Spanish services and they often share their stories about learning the language; they studied Spanish in high school, at college or in a community college; or they have been studying Spanish for years and they still don’t speak it; they have spent a large sum on textbooks, CD audio courses, Rosetta Stone or any other course out there, etc. and have spent perhaps thousands of hours confined in their rooms studying the conjugation of verbs and vocabulary lists. And they still can’t hold a basic conversation with a native Spanish speaker.

Reading, listening, memorizing vocabulary words, studying grammar topics, flashcards and practicing conjugating verbs is one thing. But when it comes time to actually meet a native speaker and speak, it’s a whole new situation, you start to speak and … freeze!!! You trip over your words. It could be a very overwhelming and disappointing experience!

If you have been studying Spanish on your own, you are probably no stranger to this situation and understand that learning a foreign language can be challenging and even a simple conversation can be frustrating and extremely difficult.

It is a fact that by just studying Spanish in the traditional way – in a classroom with a textbook – you will never be able to speak it, regardless how many hours you commit yourself to studying it.
When you just study Spanish, you build up your vocabulary, understand the grammar better and learn to conjugate the verbs in the different tenses. Your overall level improves, and over time your ability rises, you are able to understand more, and you can “theoretically” engage in on a broader range of conversations.
But studying Spanish vocab and grammar alone will never get you to speak it, but if done correctly it can help you to speak it better.

There are so many excellent online resources out there to learn Spanish; a great deal of websites and tools (videos, podcasts, fun apps) that even help you learn for free. All these tools can definitely help improve your reading, writing and listening skills. But, the most important skill in any language, that all these resources can’t teach you, is Speaking Spanish!

Speaking Spanish is one of most sought-after skills, and yet it’s the one component Spanish learners practice the least.  It is so much harder to practice Spanish compared to the other skills because it’s not something you can learn to do on your own. When it comes to conversation, computers just can’t help you in the way a native Spanish teacher can.

So how can you learn to speak Spanish? Based on my 14 years of teaching Spanish, if you are really serious about learning Spanish in Phoenix, you need the individual attention that only a qualified private tutor can offer. By hiring and working with an experienced private tutor with so many years of experience teaching the language (and who knows what he/she is doing) you get to practice speaking Spanish at your level, build up your confidence and improve and develop your verbal skills, you get used to the flow of the language, you improve your grammar and pronunciation by being corrected on the spot, and you learn real-life Spanish. And this is exactly what you’ll do in my Spanish conversation classes! Remember “practice makes perfect.” Never has it been more true than when learning Spanish.
